New Year of You

Sorry for my absence for the past two weeks, but I hope you’ll forgive me since it was due to the poor wifi on a boat in the middle of the Caribbean. So, yes, that was a great start to this year.

Honestly, on New Year’s Eve, when the clock struck midnight, I didn’t feel any different. Are you supposed to? I sat there, closing my eyes with the bursting of fireworks imprinted into my eyelids. With their bright lights cascading down the sky, I imagined them falling from the stars. The hammock I was sitting in swayed with the rocking of the boat. I put my hands behind my head and look over at my friends and family sitting and laughing and just gazing up at the spectacular light show above.

A lot of people dismiss New Year’s Eve and Day as unnecessary holidays, but I beg to differ. I want to make it clear that I am a firm believer in a person’s own ability to change their life any time they choose. Think about it. You want that dream job? Go for it. You want that A on your AP test? Go for it. What’s the worst that can happen? Failure. Failure is the worst thing that can happen, but failure doesn’t affect your ability to try again. Life is full of second chances and reminders to get back on the horse again. So, I believe that is what the new year reminds us to do. It reminds us that you are not dragged down by your failures or the challenges you faced in 2015. Because 2016 is that new hope (Star Wars pun intended) that you’ve been waiting for. 2016 is a reminder to get back on the horse and ride into the sunset like you’ve always dreamed about. The new year is a reminder that you can change your life- the power all lies with you.
